It's a Wrap!
Sunday March 16th saw South Perth come alive as Unwrapped: the
marketplace descended onto Mends Street. The event attracted more than 13, 000 people to peruse and purchase
unique products from over 50 stalls.
Unwrapped provided emerging and student designers with the opportunity
to launch their original creations whilst engaging with their target
public. The products available for sale included fashion, jewellery, artworks,
skin care and home wares.
Unwrapped Events Manager Aleksandra Gajda said the huge turnout and
incredibly positive feedback from the designers involved reinforced
that there was a major demand in Perth for a concept such as
Unwrapped.
"It was great to see the Perth public get behind local designers who
manufacture their products themselves, though there is still some way
to go in changing people's perceptions about markets from being
somewhere where you pick up mass produced tourist orientated items to
where you purchase unique, high quality products," said Ms Gajda.
Unwrapped Marketing Manager Ebony Frost said "It's brilliant to see
our concept building momentum and actually achieving what we set out
to achieve, which is to promote fresh design talent and provide a
launching platform for artistic careers and businesses. This is
something we thought Perth was in desperate need of, and given the
overwhelming response after just two events, we feel we were spot on".
The market was part of the 2008 City of South Perth Carnivale which
also incorporated children's rides, performances and cooking
demonstrations.
This was the second year Unwrapped was held on Mends Street in
partnership with the City of South Perth.
The project received funding from ArtsWA's Designer Fashion Grants Program.
