The successful launch of Unwrapped: the marketplace took place in a vibrant outdoor event on Mends Street, South Perth on Sunday 1 April, 2007.

Over 10,000 shoppers browsed fresh collections from local designers - unique fashion, jewellery, homewares and original artwork from 38 new brand names.

Shoppers were extremely impressed at the collection of stalls, with several proclaiming "Finally! Some fashionable markets like the ones in Melbourne and Sydney".

To prove the point, the ATMs on Mends Street ran out of money late in the afternoon and all designers reported impressive sales for the day and valuable, direct feedback from clients.

The concept of Unwrapped came together in 2006 when Ebony Frost found a gap in the retail market for creative start-ups with little money to invest on launching their brand. Ebony says "I wanted to start small and test the water to see if my hunch was right. The City of South Perth provided fantastic support and the umbrella event of the Mends Street Carnivale, which enabled Unwrapped to come together as planned".
